NOT JUST A RIDE- BUT THE RIDE

It had been a great day. The ride to the lake had been sunny and warm. Traffic was light that day. Temperature's were moderate- perfect in fact. Not to hot, but warm enough that the 85 mph wind didn't send a chill to my bone.
The drinks and dinner were light that night. Great company with a great view of the prestine lake. I watched as the sun set behind the mountain tops. It was still slightly sunny out and just a glimmer of a rainbow appeared over the water, I watched as it grew brighter and more intense as the minutes passed. The last glass of wine was drank just as the final minutes of day disappeared with the sun and the rainbow.
I mounted the bike, secured my helmet and jacket as the bike idled. I took a great big breath of fresh air mixed with the slightest scent of gasoline. mmmmmmmmmm. sweet. There was a slight chill now that there was no sign of sun left. I hit the road-with the ever so slight curves. For the first time I realized I could only focus on the road. It was so dark out that there was no view past the white line of the highway. There were no distractions as I accelerated- 2nd, 3rd and now finally resting in sweet number 5. The moon was bright, even tho it was just a sliver of yellow. It made the double yellow line glow on the black pavement. It was a perfect path back home. I noticed the smell slightly changing in the air...dusty, yet moist. I felt the slightest pin prick as a rain drop hit, then another, and yet another until I felt the dampness starting to work its way thru my jeans. Still I cannot keep from smiling as I flow and ebb thru the left corner, than the right. A zig and a zag. The grin on my face just becoming wider and wider...my teeth must be glowing now...the moon still is bright- i wonder where the clouds that are shedding their moisture are...somehow i wonder how they are just over me... They now are hitting my visor more intense, and the speed of me and the bike keep the droplets racing off of my visor. For a minute i imagine they are shooting stars falling on me. I take in this moment, embrace this ride- because for the first time i realize i'm not just on any ride, I am on THE ride.
